Just pull the ethernet jack (out of the computer, or
out of the wall), or turn off your Cable / DSL modem
overnight . . . or is your setup wireless ? Since
Robert said he turns off security, I would imagine he
either does this, or has a really good firewall
device.

Incidentally, there was a period of years where I ran
the computer 24/7, but I haven't done that for a long
time. It's not security concerns, or electricity
usage: I'm more concerned that something could short
out and burn the place down in my absence. I just
don't buy this business about increased stress and
reduced component longevity from all the extra cold
boots. Most of my systems have been kept for at least
4 or 5 years (very possibly above average), and
nothing has worn out yet; components or whole systems
get retired and superseded by newer gear with better
capacities or features, before their maximum service
life has run out. (I did have a CRT monitor that died
after 3 years, the one exception that occurs to me.)

Of course, my modus operandi may yet come a cropper,
since I get the impression that a lot of today's
hardware is being made disposable, on the cheap.
