Thanks for your reply.

I did not build this new box, nor did I have the kind of time I would have liked for checking it
out. But I will be visiting there again at the end of the month, so hopefully then. Frankly, I'm
surprised to find *any* recent systems that still have a Parallel Port, unless someone deliberately
specified this to a custom builder.

Perhaps this will fill in part of the missing info: Win XP, HP-LJ4L -- one of the smallest models HP
ever made, and I'm reasonably sure that it was Parallel only. The computer is a custom built
dual-core. I was told that there was only an LPT3, but I did not get into the BIOS (next time), and
did not consider that LPT3 could be a "simulation." Now I'm intrigued, and would like to
get to the bottom of this. It is sounding like the mystery may be simpler than I expected, though.

[I'm about to do up a new box for myself and it apparently has NO MB headers for Parallel or for PS/2. Based on some other-system trials, I would expect my USB --> PS/2 adapters to work well, so I should not have to give up my Omni Key keyboard or preferred mouse. But I'm not as sure about the USB --> Parallel adapter I bought, or whether one might overload and generate confusion with too many USB devices connected. Should that turn out to be a problem, I'll have to look at the other solutions, since all my own printers remain Parallel interface.]
