fleeting error msgs

Xy3 supposedly had a way to slow down error messages--to hold them on the
command line long enough to read them--which was
d ??=1
I'm not sure it works/worked in Xy3 but it sure doesn't in Xy4.
Is there any other way to get an error message to not flash by at lightspeed?
