Re: xywrite and xml

Leslie's program is very interesting. One thing that puzzled me a bit is
the complicated CIs needed to get MDNM into its XML equivalent. Why are
there MDNMs in a file at all? In XyW4, additive modes are the default;
so, for example, a book title would be ≪MD+IT≫Preliminary Introduction
to a First Study of Elephants.≪MD-IT≫ So first change all the ≪MD-
whatevers into XML (which is going to require using | rather than / as
the separator character), thus:
BX ci |≪MD-IT≫||Q2 ;(this may not be exactly right; I don't have Xy
working on this PC right now, so am coding from memory)
and so on for each of the subtractive modes. Or does Leslie have editors
who are still using Xy3, with its ≪MDIT≫this is ital,≪MDNM≫ this is
normal?
Another problem is that many XML editors won't open a file if it doesn't
start with a DOCTYPE (I think that's what it's called; it's been a while
since I was digging around in *ML) definition. Is it, perhaps, possible
to create a Least Common Denominator DOCTYPE and paste it into the top of
any file after conversion? If so, what would such a DOCTYPE look like?
By the bye, does anyone recall the original German of that famous
apochryphal book title embodying the German contribution to the great
international scholarly project on elephants (also apochrypal, but a good
story)? Emory?
