Re: Xy4 on Win 8 /VMware / Win2K

Many thanks, Kari.

The W2K installation CD image I used already came with SP4. (Best not to ask where I got it - - I take huge risks with a brand new machine on the grounds that I don't have much to lose.) So I don't have to worry about that.

So for my purposes, which are just to run Xy4 at this point, I am fine. I can foresee a time when I might need to run some 16-bit font programs. I think Fontographer 3.1 will probably run on W2K, but some other programs I have of slight interest only work on Win95 or 98.

I'm not surprised you couldn't get XP to update on VMware since its weak point seems to be internet. But that is fine with me for now.

I'd say it's a good solution for now, for Win 8. No doubt as all these VM managers grow, there will be different choices and solutions.

One thing I can especially praise this version VMware under Win 8.1 for is that I don't see the slowdowns in the keyboard buffer, such that using Xy4 could become painfully slow after a while.

I am sure you can get it to connect, but running a browser under W2K is a perilous exercise. But you need an Internet connection to update the operating system to service pack 4, and other Windows programs you might run under W2K. Alternatively, you can download the updates for most programs using Win8 and copy them to the W2K VM. Some programs may need to updated live, but you should restrict connections to the Net to this category.

This sounds interesting, and encouraging. I am not a big fan of VMware, because it takes over too much, but maybe it deserves a closer look. Somehow, I did not get it to work with XP updates. I have not much need for it, as I still work mostly in a DOS VM under VirtualPC 2007 64-bit.

I wonder how I might test whether I have an internet connexion or not?

It would be wonderful to know that I didn't have to worry about providing Win2K with AV.

Altogether, VMware seems great. It is a great comfort to know that I am good to go with Xy4 for a few more years whilst enduring Win 8 which is dreadful though it does have some under-the-hood virtues. I have no doubt there will always be a way, thanks to virtual machines.
