Re: Upper ASCII characters in XyWrite under vDosXy

Hi Carl.

Screenshots of your file opened in expanded mode are linked below. Here
are the differences between what I see and what you see:

128: euro instead of C cedilla
141: infinity instead of i grave
152: lower case phi instead of y umlaut
158: upper case phi instead of peseta
159: [159] plus florin sign instead of only florin sign
166: box-drawing character instead of ordinal female
167: box-drawing character instead of ordinal male
208: [208] plus box-drawing character instead of only box-drawing character
209: [209] plus box-drawing character instead of only box-drawing character
213: i grave instead of box-drawing character
231: [231] plus tau small instead of only tau small
232: [232][314] instead of phi capital
236: [236][319] instead of infinity
237: [237] plus phi small instead of phi small
242: [242] plus greater than or equal instead of only greater than or equal
243: [243] plus less than or equal instead of only less than or equal
244: [244] plus vertical line instead of upper integral
245: [245][310] instead of lower integral

As you say, the presence of characters 174 and 175 mean that the display
is contorted if I open the file in draft view. However, a copy of the
file with those two characters omitted shows other differences in draft
view. For example, 181-184 display as [283], [289], [275], and [276].

Does this suggest a solution?

Thanks!
Martin

No, isn't embedded into the document ... and putting explicitly into the document doesn't make any difference (should it?).
OK, let's step back for a moment. Let's take the Speedo characters out of the equation. After all, these are 3-byte characters that aren't part of the US Ascii charset. (For example, the [294] small alpha is actually three Ascii chars, 254, 38 and 0, that display as one in Xy.) Let's focus on the range of 1-byte upper Ascii chars that *can* be displayed in XyWrite, i.e., Ascii 128-253. (Recall that, in Xy4, 254 and 255 are control characters and can't be displayed in 1- byte form.) Here's a link showing how 128-253 display for me in Xy4- vDosXy, with CHCP 437 and DF LA=437: http://users.datarealm.com/ammaze/xfer/upperasc.htm The file that I used for these screen shots is attached. CAll it in XyWrite -- be sure to use eXPanded view: CA/100 ASCUPPER.TXT; otherwrise the lines with Ascii 174 and 175 won't display correctly -- and compare what you get to what I get. Do they differ? If so, where? (Note, by the way, that Ascii 224 is a small alpha in CP 437.)
