Paul,
  this happens to me frequently in OS/2 (I also run NT4 on occasion, but
don't recall it there). The problem always is that somehow, sometime the
archive tag on the folder has been turned on. So maybe you should try
issuing an ATTRIB -A command on the "invisible" directory.
