OFF TOPICS: modem speed

Could someone help me ?

I' m using a new notebook with an internal modem, PCtel HSP56
MR 2.10 9K, and win98

If I use an esternal serial modem 56K the connection speed is
about 50000 bps.

But if I use the internal modem, on the same tel. line, the speed is
no more than 33000 bps.

I' m unable to get he internal modem to work faster.
