Screen length gets reset after shelling to DOS

Here's one of the many curiosities of Xy4 on XP.
I have my screen length (and screen buffer) set to 43 lines in the .LNK for
Xy4. SETTINGS.DFL has ScreenLength set to 43.
If I shell to DOS, when it returns, both the Properties menu and VA/NV $SL
show 50 lines!
Just found a related anomaly: when I launch Xy, either from the quicklaunch
icon or entering "EDITOR" at the DOS prompt, the VA/NV $SL is 50. If I do
another LOAD SETTINGS.DFL, I get the proper VA/NV $SL of 43. And there's no
SL setting in STARTUP.INT.
To further complicate the issue, when I return from DOS with Properties
(reached by right-clicking on the blue window top) showing 50 lines, I
can't re-set it to 43. It just won't "take"--goes back to 50. This happens
whether or not I check "Apply properties to current window only" or "Save
properties for future windows with same title."

What does it all mean?
