If the machine (e.g., notebook) has a sleep or hybernation mode, then it
should be shutting down it's monitor and hardisk, and thereby generating
so little heat that it should also not need the fan. I keep my Mac on a
cradle with it's own fans, so the Mac hardly ever needs to turn on it's
internal fans even when it's not in sleep mode.
