From the little I've read, the decision to upgrade from Win 8 is a
relatively easy one, while the upgrade from 7 is more debatable.
Since it took me 19 years to go from Win 95 to NT to XP to (only last
year) 7, skipping several major releases along the way, I'm in no
rush to move to 10, although I may well end up there. The decision
point will come next year, when the free upgrade is about to expire.

I understand that Microsoft is planning to move to a subscription
model, where the user pays an annual fee for upgrades. Depending on
pricing, this may not be a bad thing, especially if it meant a longer
lease on life for OSes, such as Win 7, that remain serviceable
despite their age. Personally, I'd rather see the computing giants
pour resources into digital preservation rather than the next set of
bells & whistles for end-users. Santayana's epigram about remembering
the past will prove all too true if PDFs and JPEGs are undecipherable
a hundred years from now.
