Xy works excellently either under the MS-DOS upon which the Win9x GUI runs,
or in an MS-DOS window therein, or (my own preference) a Take Command (
http://www.jpsoft.com/ ) window therein.
I'm also credibly told that it works splendidly in OS/2 and MS-DOS run by
either Mac OS or Linux.
As for 486es, a friend is contentedly running Win2000 on one of his and
using the result as a file server and general dogsbody-computer.
