EB/ES and DX (was Re: Change Invisibles: migrating ...)

Isn't this one of those little (or not-so-little) ways in which Xy4 is a
genuine advance on Xy3?

(I've been exploiting this same draft-view feature for years, both in the
above on its own (to simply eliminate all FNs) and in conjunction with
routines that copy embedded FNs into a separate (endnote) file and convert
XyWrite's soft note-numbering into permanent (hard) note numbers as cues in
the text and note numbers in the endnote file.)

On the subject of Error Beep and freezing the screen image, Carl is right:

But elsewhere (I've deleted that e-mail) someone today suggests that
freezing the screen with function DX (canceled by DO at the end of the
routine) is also superfluous. I think (though I couldn't give stopwatch
times at the moment) that procedures like the one cited above --
SE |≪FN1| [to flag a footnote in draft view]
     BD
     loop back ...
-- do run faster in a big file if the screen is disabled.

But DX always makes me nervous, because I can't be confident that the PC
hasn't simply locked up on me. So when I use DX, I prefer to use it for
short subroutines only; and I try to remember to precede DX with a suitable
"≪pr ...≫" phrase so that while the screen is frozen there will be some
wording on the comment line [or whatever it's called -- the line below the
command line?] that reminds me what's supposed to be going on behind the
scenes. Then the disappearance of that little message is a signal to me
that the behind-the-scenes operation is over.

I'd give a specific example, but all my XPLs are still on the old (Win3.1)
PC, and I'm writing on the fast new (Win98) one. I haven't yet (after 3
months) installed XyWin and Xy4 on the new PC because all the messages
posted to this group about installation problems under Win9x have me
spooked ... :-|
