A _good_ phone works on all frequencies, and picks up the
provider you specify. Ever shrewd, the U.S. (and Japan/South
Korea) mostly use a non-standard system (CDMA). The rest of the
world uses a standardized system. It's sort of like English
measure vs. metric: one is stupid & illogical, the other is
smart. What's amazing to me is that GSM phones in the U.S. cost
a fortune, whereas in Europe they virtually give them away.

Don't just go out a buy a phone willy-nilly. Do some research.
Make sure you get an *unlocked* phone (or can get it unlocked)
so that you can select your provider, otherwise you'll be stuck
with one provider and even if the phone works abroad, you'll pay
phenomenal usage rates. And if you're going to buy a good
(=expensive) phone, make sure it has a decent operating system.
