That's SGML (and HTML). Like other dtp software, QXP uses the
same code to cancel an attribute. But, additionally, QXP's 

attribute is equivalent to
≪mdnm≫. So a complex macro to replace ≪mdbo≫ ... ≪mdnm≫
pairs with 
...  is unnecessary. When working on files converted from QXP
to ascii, some means of converting  ...  to ≪mdbo≫ ...
≪mdnm≫ would be called for. But that wasn't the question.    --ann
