Thanks for the quick response. I put in login.cmd as instructed and it
seems to work

But I don't seem to be able to go back to using LPT1 with the parallel
cable.  That is, I haven't found a way to disconnect the share. (my
printer name is HPLASERJ)

notably,
net use \\HPLASERJ /DELETE gets me
The network connection could not be found

and
net use LPT1: \\HPLASERJ /DELETE gets me
A command was used with conflicting switches

if I enter net use after the first of the above, I get
New connections will not be remembered
and then a status table showing Status OK Local LPT1 and Remote
\\T20\\HPLASERJ

so -- is there a way to disconnect the share? IS there a way to toggle
between using LPT1 normally and to access the share printer?

and while we're at it: I assume that I can use alternate printers by
chnaginf the sharename, but is anything else required to do that?
