Wow! Thanks a lot for this lead! In fact, I also have been using
a modified color set for Windows which replaces the "horrible
bright white" with light grey. I just switched back to the normal
Windows colors, and sent a test fax. Lo-and-behold, it worked!
Page 2 came out just fine.
When I went back to my subdued color set, the problem reappeared.
So at least now I know that when I want to send a longer fax, I
should toggle the color set beforehand. This of course is still
far from ideal, but it is less trouble than switching to a lower
screen resolution, since there is no need to exit and restart
Windows. Tech Support never told me anything about this.
Actually, I just received a fax from Britt Forbes at the Tech
Group. Let me quote the passage regarding the fax problem:

"The faxing problem is a relatively new problem [I've had and
reported it from the very beginning, WB], and technical support
has been able to reproduce the problem. I have not had any word
from development [I wonder how many persons this refers to, WB]
as to when there will be a fix for this problem. In the meantime,
to fax properly, reduce your screen resolution."

Doug, the strange thing is that you seem to have this problem
when printing (which I imagine to be even more bothersome) while
I can print fine (using the Windows printer driver for the
LaserJet III), but only have the problem when using the fax
driver.

Anyhow, your lead regarding the color setting made my day. This
list is worth its weight in gold!

And a comment regarding the problems with formatted/page-line
mode that have been reported here:

I have been using Xy4DOS version 4.016 since about a month. Most
of the time, I am in draft mode, but even when switching to
page/line mode, things seem to work well enough. So far, I
haven't run into any evidence that this mode is 'seriously
broken'. Which just goes to show that there are as many different
possibilities as there are computer users and configurations.
Which again makes the job of software publishers and their
support staff not exactly easy, so maybe we shouldn't complain
quite so much...
