Missing XYwin filters

A collegue who managed to installed XYwin under Windoze 95 but
is otherwise even less computer literate than I complains that
there are no filters available (which was the main argument to
get XYW in the first place...)
I went to take a look and could not see any obvious reason. The
\filters directory exists and is filled with the usual stuff,
and both the default and startup files look normal.
Any item that one should check before recommending a reinstallation?
(Everything works normal, but the boxes for selecting formats
under "save as" and "import" are blank.)
