  To actually recover the material, you ideally need a disk editor
that allows you to inspect any area of the disk and to select portions
of empty space to reconstruct into a new file.

   I forgot to say (this is very important) that, if you do try
using such a disk editor, you *must* boot up in a non-multi-tasking
operating system such as MS-DOS, or one of those Linux boot disks that
don't write to the disk themselves. This will probably not work if
you boot up in Windows (any version), and the utility may even refuse
to run at all.
