Re: XyIII Plus '[tilde]' Question

≪ Discretionary hyphen (DH) can be changed in Xy3.
In your printer file, add this:
	DF DH={character of your choice} ≫
		--Stephen Moore

≪ If you say so. I can't get it to work in v3.58B. ≫ --Carl Distefano

≪ It works for me (with 3.57); "DF DH" has been letting
me use the tilde for at least the ten years that I've been
writing C++ programs, and possibly longer than that. ≫
--Irv Thomae (Who _still_ hasn't upgraded from XY III+)

df dh=[whatever] is documented at least as far back as
v3.54. As I recall I didn't work in v3.52. I too have
used it for years in v3.56 and v3.57.

≪ (I use XY both for general writing and for programming--
in the latter context, the tilde is sometimes indispensable.) ≫

Great programming editor. PCWeek ran a piece a few years
back apparently advising against using word processors
for the purpose. I missed it, but felt reassured when
I read the indignant protest from a Rockwell programmer
who used xyWrite enthusiastically to code C. Till then
I'd wondered if anyone else wrote C with xyW and compiled
from the xyW CMline.

The magazine and the programmer both were right. xyW3
is a peerless text editor that happens to have pretty
good word processing options too. Signature/xyW4 is
a richer word processor than v3, but all it adds to
xyW3-the-text-editor is unwelcome bulk. How can you
improve on perfection? The only new feature I can think
of that's of use to programmers (xpl aside) is being
able to handle 1Ah: xyW3's persistent eof in source
code chokes PostScript hardware. Not to worry. The
xpl-accessory eof manager .EXE I wrote is a fraction
of the size difference between v3 and v4 kernels. --a
