You can do it, after a fashion, with Eudora, without going to any lengths.
You'd use Eudora to get (and later to send) mail. The basic idea is that
Eudora uses ASCII .mbx files. You can read and edit those files in Xy, then
save them and re-load Eudora. It will find that it .toc file for that
mailbox no longer fits, but it will just ask you if it should make it again
(and you click okay).
I wouldn't recommend it, however. It's rather awkward and you have to keep
closing and re-opening Eudora (i.e., not a good idea to change a .mbx file
while Eudora is running).
Also, there's the issue of having to "compact" the mailboxes (which is
another button to push in Eudora every time). And you'll want to see the
nice directory/table of contents of all the emails in their various
mailboxes, easily resorted by name/date/subject, which a real email pgm
makes possible.
The anti-rodent solution I use, instead, is to have bought a programmable
keyboard and to program the Windows-keystrokes I want into it for when I'm
running Eudora.
But you definitely can edit .mbx files and use them (in Eudora) unscathed.
I have been doing this daily for years. If you decide to do that, I can help.
