Thanks for writing the message I was going to write, except that I
use an old freebie from PC Mag called PRISM which I think does the
same as VPT, namely give you easy access to the entire palette of DOS
colors and lets you save and reload color sets (from batch files, of
course). Just as I wouldn't think of doing DOS based work without
Ultravision to make the screen fonts bearable, I wouldn't dream of
using DOS with those godawful default colors. My color sets for Xy
have long included cyan on black (very nice cyan, that is), but my
favorite for low-light conditions is a very smooth yellowish amber on
black. For proofing my own work, I switch to saffron on indigo...
