I'm confused. If you are saving two copies of the same file, how do
you avoid overwrites? and ultimately how do you combine your
changes.. is that a last step manual op? or do you end up renaming
one of them in the end?

 thats how i usually use two versions of same file. File1 and File2.
 what am i missing here?
