It works on STAR TREK VOYAGER doesn't it? What more could you want?

Somewhat more seriously, the advent of cheap computing seems to have
diverted most of the technical brainpower of the nation (and R&D funds)
into computer software and chip making (try and read a discussion of
"technology" anywhere in the popular press that doesn't begin and end
with computer stuff). Bio-medicine soaks up most of what's left. Things
like aircraft design, optics, chemical engineering, mechanical design,
rocket engines, etc. aren't advancing at the rates of the 1960's, and
probably won't during our lifetimes.

So hologrammic television is going to give way to virtual reality.
Sorry about that.
