It occurred to me that a parse isn't necessary in Xy3; a containment
test will suffice. Avoiding the parse (and a few other, minor
changes) makes the code compatible with versions earlier than 3.54 --
although I can't see why a Xy3 user would choose to run anything
earlier than 3.55, can you?
