Eudora .MBX files (the actual emails) are plain text.
Won't editing mess up Eudora's index of

Yes, but Eudora will automatically re-index any damaged file. I see it do
that all the time. It will even create an index file if one is missing. Of
course, huge files may make it throw up, but I think Jon intends his
editing to break up the files.
 I'd just be stunned if that file is
pure text...

The index file, which has a .TOC extension, is binary.
