RE: Xy4 Customization Guide (Index) Preview

Since posting this message a short time ago, I've discovered a few things
about Reader that are somewhat annoying.

It looks like Reader 5 is the last version that can make use of Adobe index
files...at least I think. Reader 6, both at my workplace and at home,
display an error message, when I try to use Search, that says there's
something wrong and Reader needs to be re-installed (kind of odd that would
happen on two very different machines...oh well). Re-installing didn't fix
it.

So, I just installed Reader 7. Now when I use Search, instead of using an
index it simply searches the current document. This restricted ability isn't
all that bad...if you know which section the information you're looking for
is in. Otherwise, you'll have to run your query over and over on each
section until you find what you're looking for.

I have several good reasons for breaking up the manual's sections into
separate files, so this development is somewhat vexing. It's almost enough
to make me reconsider and create the book as a single file...almost. One of
the biggest reasons for the separate files is that they're much easier to
use online. I guess I'll wait and see how thing's shake-out.

In the meantime, I recommend using Reader 5 (I like it much better anyway,
but it would be useless to try to hang on to it forever).

OK...There is now an index file for the Customization Guide sections that
have been completed.

If you're not familiar with the Adobe index system, see "Using Reader's
Index Function" in any of the Customization Guide's sections.

Adobe Acrobat, which I'm using to create the PDFs, has an indexing ability.
I'm planning on running it on the files after I'm done.

It would be easy to create one for what we've got so far...as a test. Might
be interesting to see if such an index works well for this sort of
publication. I'll upload it tonight.

Brian,

Is it too late to suggest some kind of index addenda/errata?
