In footnotes you could replace ≪PN≫ with XX and use the
XPL loop (by using the tags as beginning and ending field markers)
to cut "XX" and insert the current page number; later, if needed,
rerun the loop to cut the old page number and replace it with
current page number. Then DF, and at print time change the field's
tags to nothing.

try to write a simple loop and give it a go.
