I am currently visiting the location with the older W98 machine that had been
un-defragmentable (Defrag kept reaching 1% done, then dropping back to 0%, ad
infinitum). The reason being all kinds of crap the kids had installed that
went into Systray. Someone here suggested an ERD boot, then running Defrag
from the Command Prompt. This could not work, because -- like so many WIN
things -- it is GUI *only*. I did have the Caldera DISKOPT with me, but did
not need to try it. (Good, because I don't think it is FAT-32 aware, and in
the past it seems to have needed Caldera DOS to be running.) What I did that
worked was a "Safe Mode" boot of W98. This seems to have bypassed all the
Systray items. The Defrag ran to completion, but took many hours, as it had
been a very long time since the last one. As always, thanx to All for their
suggestions.
