Buy a router -- USD $50 or so. Intruders can't get past that, especially if
you shut down incoming requests on all ports.

Your equipment will be easier to use, and last longer, if you just leave it
running. Turning this stuff on and off is tough on hardware. DSL modems can
take a long time to synchronize. The only things I turn off -- ever -- are my
external monitors. One thing you never want to do is let notebook screens
remain lit all the time (best not to use them at all, except when travelling).
