Working with very large files (or very small transient program spaces with lots
of TSRs) memory fragmentation can get so bad that you can't shell to does
because there isn't room left to load the non-resident part of command.com.
Sometimes even closing files doesn't cleasr the problem (DOSs' memory manager
isn't the greatest and it can have trouble deallocating freed memory) and the
only thing you can do is quit XY.
