I just had the same problem with Microsoft Mail -- a mail archive that had
ballooned to 1.2 GB (that's not a typo). After deleting about 7 months of
saved mail, MM slowed to a crawl with constant disk accesses.
Solution: Right click on the desktop icon. Click Properties. Highlight
Personal Folders. Click Compact Now. Do this over lunch hour or overnight --
it takes forever.
