Rather than my personal ;PR; color settings, what you should start
with is the generic monochrome display settings; i.e., MONO.DSP,
which is part of the basic Xy4 installation. The command is
LOAD MONO.DSP.

Then copy VPT.EXE to a convenient directory (I keep it in the
directory with EDITOR.EXE), and launch it from within Xy:

DOS/NV/Z /C d:\path\VPT

In VPT, go through each of the 16 attributes and set the color by
adjusting the R, G and B slides to the desired values. Return to Xy
after setting each attribute to see what effect it has on the
display. When you have a palette that's basically pleasing, save it
to a file in VPT (command S; when prompted, supply a filename, but
no extension; .VPT is added automatically).

At this point, you can go back and tweak your Xy color settings to
achieve some nice finishing touches. There are some helpful
comments in MONO.DSP as to which settings affect which display
elements. Have a Xy color chart handy (U2 users command
HELP COLORS); it will cut down on the trial-and-error.

Once your Xy settings are optimized, you can save them and forget
about them. Go back to VPT and have some fun. Experiment with
different combinations of background and text; play around with the
attributes that control various screen elements, especially CMline,
PRompt, ruler line, command triangles, etc. You'll be surprised at
how many different and interesting schemes you can come up with.
