One word: PostScript.

No typographic or graphical need too demanding. Good enough for
the publishing industry and available to all. ... Printer with a
PostScript interpreter not required: Software PS interpreters
have drivers to print PS code to nearly any printer. Obstacles:
Necessity to learn more than you may want to know about the
PostScript language to bend it to your needs, X amount of time
tweaking xyWrite PS driver prolog and substitution tables (TTG
can probably help). Analog help: Several Addison-Wesley or
Peachpit Press books.
