RE Wildcard error message

Got a chance to try Robert's revised routine and other suggestions out
today, and Guinea Pig deposeth as follows:
First ran STRIPMD, which suggested running itself again after the first
round. Did so, then ran DREFNV, which complained of "too many program
calls," but ran and cleaned up a lot of the detritus. What was still in
the file were innumerable lines like this:
≪HY1≫≪OP0≫≪WD0≫≪PT1≫≪PT2≫≪PT1≫
Copied that to the CML to CI to nothing, then ran CI /≪TSW≫// to get
rid of all tab settings, then CI /≪PTWN≫// and got some 600 and
something changes!
I then ran ci /≪MDBR≫≪W≫≪MDNM≫/≪MD+IT≫≪W≫≪MD-IT≫/
and in one fell swoop not merely got additive modes, but the changeover
from BR to ital. Then did likewise for the MDSU numbers. Possibly
interesting factoid: the original file(converted from Word) was 65,175 in
size. With all these changes made, the new file is 49,931; difference of
15,244 bytes. But the real point is that this kind of cleanup is
IMPOSSIBLE in any other word processor. Well, your could inch through the
file in WordPerfect with Reveal Codes on and manually delete all the
garbage, but who has the time or the patience? And don't even think about
it in Word. How people copy edit in anything but Xy I cannot imagine.
Thanks again.
