Yes, before posting a message to a mailing list wondering how accurate a
rumor (or "information") is, the would-be sender might either make some
effort to check the accuracy for him- or herself, or send private mail to a
better-informed friend.

Any message urging masses of people to take immediate action is likely to
be misguided or plain fraudulent. (And incidentally, some of us don't have
a congressman to write to.)
