Smartset troubles

I loaded XY4 for DOS over the weekend, after years of III+ use,
and that now allows me to take better advantage of the advice on
this list. For starters, I downloaded XPLNS and SMARTSET, and
when I unzipped them, I got files that I could open only with
difficulty.

In the case of each file, I had a line of codes on the top
(defined in yellow) which caused a loop of error messages when I
opened the file, something like "style not found" and "default
something or other...."

After pressing lots of escapes and scroll downs, I was able to
delete the top line in each file, and that solved the problem.
But what happened? What did I lose?

(BTW, I opened these in XY3, not XY4. Was that the problem?)
