This may not be exactly what Stephen had in mind, but what about the outlining commands ?  At one time, I had some of that placed almost like templates onto SaveGets . . .  but it's been so long I don't recall any details.  It may be possible to limit that to numbers somehow.  (I also have very little occasion to use Xy3.)

  If you are happy adding the numbers in front of each line, there are
  tools like:

  http://www.miniwebtool.com/add-line-numbers/

 

  You could remove them with a suitable CI command afterwards.

 

  On the other hand, if you do not want add the numbers into the file,
  only show them, the only option is to use a programmer's editor.
