You wouldn't by any chance be thinking of a dedicated word-proc. system,

sort of like a souped up Selectric with some memory that recorded
contracts
and legal boilerplate directly onto tape, for later use (transcription
? direct
print-out) by the secretarial pool ? My father's law firm had several
of these
for awhile, prior to the emergence of the standalone PC in the early
'80s.
