RE: smart words (questions for KBF)

One of the primary functions of the overall SmartWords product is
document assembly. SmartWords is a completely integrated tool for
integrating relational data, text fragments and business rules to
dynamically assemble and re-assemble documents. Those functions are
not, however, included in the "text editor" product we are proposing to
make available here. That functionality is made available as part of
application development partnerships we form with the objective of
building products for re-sale.

To develop this functionality we have invented a whole array of new
commands and structures, but in doing so we have not eliminated anything
from the editor's command set, so anything that works now would
presumably continue to work. We have removed a number of functions from
the menus, however, if they are no longer relevant to our use of the
product. Document assembly, as you think of it, is one of those
functions that is no longer activated from any menu, but I feel
confident you would have no trouble implementing it from the command
line and/or in expanded view.

As for backward compatibility, there were some commands that got changed
or were not supported when we went to version 4 and Windows. Everything
in those programs is supported in SW, but, any compatibility issue
between 3+ and 4 still exists and is not likely to change. My
undertanding is that on a command level people didn't have too much
trouble, although conceptual things like the page model, font handling,
etc. are somewhat different.

The IG command is not much different from XW, and isn't as robust as we
would ultimately like it to be.
