....Which branch--2015 or 2016?--is best for XY4 with the latest U2?
Or what's the salient difference between them?
The 2015 branch is 100% compatible with Xy4+U2 -- full stop, end of
story. As for 2016, I put compatibility somewhere north of 90%. A
handful of U2 routines that call Windows executables (BigEdit, for
example) don't work as expected; if you don't use them, you probably
wouldn't notice anything. As for the differences, 2016 has a slight
speed advantage and built-in printing facilities. (But PostScript and
PCL printing in 2015 is excellent. The latest vDosPlus build nails it.)
