RE: Xy4 DOS and Win Me

The short answer to this is yes, you can run XY4 on Windows ME. I have done
it, but have only been using ME for about a week now. However, you may not
like the way it runs on ME. If you are a heavy user of Xy4, you would
probably be happier with Windows 98SE or Windows 2000.

Windows ME is less DOS friendly than earlier versions of Windows. Even the
DOS Prompt is hidden under Accessories, rather than visible on the Start
menu. (I copied it back). Also, when configured to full screen it actually
fills only about 2/3 of the screen, rather than the true full screen I had
in 98SE (and 2000). It is still pretty clear on a sharp monitor though.

If you install Windows 2000 from the CD yourself, you can set up a dual boot
system that allows you to go directly into DOS and run it from there. ME
runs all DOS applications in a window and you have to be careful setting up
the Properties menu to ensure you have sufficient memory.

Subject: Xy4 DOS and Win Me

This may already have been covered, but has anyone had experience
running
Xy4 DOS under Windows Me? A newspaper columnist wrote this week: "Win Me
also no longer supports 'real mode' DOS programs (meaning some old games
won't work), taking it one other step away from its DOS legacy -- but
not so
far that one crashing application can't hang the entire system, just as
in
Windows 95 and 98."
