I understand the logic of partitioning, though not how it provides greater security. If you have partitions and the disk fails, fails irreparably, how does partitioning help?
Not in the case of a hardware failure. But the fact is, modern
hardware is relatively sound. It's the software (i.e., Gates' garbage)
that reeks on ice. Long before most hard drives fail, Windows gets
corrupted. It is then that partitioning shows its strength. You can
wipe C: and reinstall, while your data sits safely on E: and F: (and
in my case, my DOS apps on D:). Furthermore, one can copy the Windows
and Driver CDs to a partition and set up from there. Quicker than an
optical disc, and no danger of the CDs' being missing when you need
them. (Keep text files with all your install keys there too).
I make two images a week,
With data on one or more separate, Fat32 logical drives, you don't
have to make "images": Just xcopy everything on those logical drives.
Or just everything since you last did so. When the CD gets full, be
sure to "finalize" it, so that it's no longer UDF but standard CD.
(both Roxio and Nero have provisions for this, I think. I'm using
older versions, so cannot be sure about the latest.)
