Re: Wikipedia entry on XyWrite

It was a mini-computer but I forget the base hardware. I remember the
keyboard weighed 10 pounds and had this nice hard key resistance, which
I preferred since my own writing technology at the time was a big
bruiser of a Smith Corona manual. The monitor was like a huge test scope
with soft green letters. I was working for the Patriot Ledger during the
evenings while in college and I remember the joys of riding insert and
being able to whiz around reordering things and dropping in context here
and there after going over notes with my editors and consulting the clip
files. Convinced me to go out and buy a PC. Ended up with a Kaypro II
and WordStar which could be, using some kits available on BBSes at the
time, stripped down into a lean, usable (no mouse to distract) word
processor. I was working in the Framingham offices of the Middlesex News
at the time and HarteHanks had this really odd system called ECRM which
was kind of usable but didn't have the feel and flow of Atex. I didn't
discover Xy until I returned from overseas n 1989 and went to work for a
small chain that was using Xy which I clipped and made legal through a
purchase of Signature used which allowed me to upgrade at Technology
Group. I wonder if anyone is selling the keyboards. . .

And it ran on a mincomputer, as I recall, not a mainframe. DEC PDP-11, maybe, and maybe others. It's where I started, and I have some memory of the machine itself, not bigger than a smallish refrigerator, plus a disk array, I think. -----Original Message----- From: Avrom Fischer Sent: Jun 11, 2008 5:33 PM To: xywrite@xxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Wikipedia entry on XyWrite The name you are looking for Atex. avromf@xxxxxxxx mailto:avromf@xxxxxxxx or af413@xxxxxxxx mailto:af413@xxxxxxxx ----- Original Message ----- *From:* Peter Cassidy mailto:pcassidy@xxxxxxxx *To:* xywrite@xxxxxxxx xywrite@xxxxxxxx *Sent:* Wednesday, June 11, 2008 1:39 PM *Subject:* Re: Wikipedia entry on XyWrite ATEX Harry Binswanger wrote: > I just looked up the Wikipedia entry on XyWrite.
