No news to this group, to be sure, but I cannot help but shake my
head sadly every time I hear of people who think they have to use a
Windows word processor just because they are using Windows. To me,
Windows (95) is a GREAT shell, and it runs ALL of my DOS programs
(which still outnumber my Windows programs by a good margin). Unlike
those of others, my experiences with Win95 have been largely
favorable. On my two (homegrown) desktop machines as well as on my
Compaq laptops, it crashes far more seldom than any other operating
system I have tried (on the order of one crash every 2 months or so).
There was a bit of initial fiddling with the MS-DOS box properties
involved (which I've mostly forgotten now), but that done, DOS under
Windows is as stable (and Xy-friendly) as could be. That is why
reports of the imminent death of DOS leave me fairly cold, and
excited tales of Xy running under a DOS emulation on Macs or Linux
don't exactly bowl me over. But to each her own...
