You're right:  it *is* font-specific, with different results from one monospaced font to another.  In this case, I was able to modify the font with a freeware editor, to get the em.

I haven't tried printing yet - - I really must - - but the first
question I would ask is, which font does it happen with and does it
happen with other fonts?
