A while back, there was some discussion on the list of Rich Text Format,
or RTF.
O'Reilly has recently published "RTF Pocket Guide" by Sean M. Burke. The
first chapter, "RTF Tutorial", is available as a free sample PDF download
at:
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/rtfpg/chapter/index.html
It's a good introduction, and may be all you ever need to know. And the
price is right.
