I use emacs only on the University's mail server, not a PC version.
Normally I write messages at home using PC-WRITE (hard line ends) or
XYWRITE and a conversion macro, and then upload them. I use
emacs when I have to compose a reply online. That is a Unix
version, which presupposes a mainframe keyboard and does not map
the meta key. As for the latter, see any Gnu Emacs manual.
