dirty little secrets

To all, a bunch of candy canes and a couple of other stocking

In thread "Re XYwrite on OS/2" James D. Besserr
(jbesser@xxxxxxxx) writes:

pleased with DV [ ... ]

I've never used DV, but had to laugh.

My own dirty little secret is devotion to the graphical word
processor built into the Geoworks Ensemble 2 suite. PostScript
support is dismal (no way to integrate Type 1 fonts, no EPS
impex), all printer drivers are slow, a handful of users are
noisy MSophobic cultists convinced non-Ensemble users are fools,
and it's so far from the mainstream (sold only mail order from
the developer), that admitting use is a humiliation. But: It has
MasterSoft xyWrite filters (!) and seamless text/graphics
integration that would knock the socks off anybody who's ever
wrestled the big-name competition. It's
*fast* (and built-in print spooling returns use of the PC at
once), has surprisingly advanced dtp features, runs as a DOS app
under Windows, is said to run well under Warp, and costs $80: a
remarkable complement to xyWrite 3 if you can finesse the
downside.

Passed along by a friend who read it on a WordPerfect bulletin
board:

: [ ... ] don't think Word is any better. If you want : power,
customizability and speed without problems, : you ought to be
using XyWrite for DOS. I use WPW 6.1 : strictly for Chinese
input.

My chagrined apologies to Carl Distefano and Chet Gottfried for
dropping the ball on xyW 3/4/XPL etc. matters. Happened not from
lack of interest but an excess--too much to say. Maybe after the
first of the year? (Don't take that as a threat. ) ...

I join John Gordon in thanking Nathan and everyone responsible
for starting this list. A terrific service to xyWrite users!
Happy holidays to all.
