special characters in Xy4

I've been using NB lately, but have gone back to XY4, and have found
that Ctrl + Alt won't insert the special characters--I have to use the
menu, a tedious route. Anyone know why this should be? I have
Signature, too, and everything works fine there. The problem has
nothing to do with the 437/850 code difference between Xy4 & Sig.
